PowerBook

Terms of Service

The terms PowerBook comes with.

Free to use on your own computer, with your books in your own keeping.

Effective October 22, 2026

1. Who you agree with

These terms cover PowerBook: the app, on every platform it is published for, and this website.

If you live in the United States, you agree them with Unidatum Integrated Products LLC. Everywhere else in the world, you agree them with Unidatum Integrated Products Limited, Venture Hub, 136 Capel Street, Dublin D01 T2C9, Ireland. "Unidatum", "we" and "us" mean whichever of the two that is.

By installing or using PowerBook you accept these terms. If you do not, do not use it.

2. PowerBook

PowerBook keeps a business's books on your own computer: it reads bank statements, suggests an account for each line, records journal entries, and works out reports and Schedule C figures. We do not host your books or hold an account for you.

With a licence key turned on, PowerBook also asks Claude, through Unidatum's hub, about lines its own models are unsure of. That is the only service of ours it uses.

PowerBook is proprietary and closed source. The third-party components it includes are open source, under their own licences (such as MIT, BSD, Apache 2.0 and MPL 2.0), which continue to apply to them.

3. Your licence

We give you a free, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use PowerBook on computers you own or control, to keep your own books or those of a business you work for. All rights not expressly granted are reserved.

4. What you may not do

You may not: copy PowerBook except to install it; modify it or make works derived from it; reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble it, except where the law allows you to despite this term; redistribute, sell, rent or sublicense it; offer it to others as a hosted service; remove its notices; or use it to build a competing product.

You must use PowerBook lawfully, including under export control and sanctions laws.

5. Military use

PowerBook may be used for military purposes by armed forces, defence ministries and defence contractors, provided that use does not directly cause the death of persons protected under the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols, such as civilians, prisoners of war and medical personnel. A breach of this is material, ends your licence immediately without notice, and leaves you solely responsible for your obligations under export, sanctions and humanitarian law.

Separately, if PowerBook is used, directly or indirectly, to support the State of Israel, including its government, armed forces, agencies and contractors, the licence terminates immediately and the software becomes unlicensed.

6. Not tax, accounting or legal advice

PowerBook is a tool for keeping books. It is not tax, accounting or legal advice, and Unidatum is not your accountant or tax preparer. Its suggestions, including those from Claude and from its own models, are guesses that can be wrong; the account a line is recorded under, and every figure you file, are your decision.

Schedule C figures are worked out from the entries you record and the rules PowerBook applies, which follow the form's instructions as we understand them for the year shown. Tax law changes and depends on your circumstances. Check the figures, and ask a qualified professional where it matters, before you rely on them or file a return.

7. Your books are yours, and in your keeping

You own your books and what you import, and we claim no rights in them. They are kept on your computer, and we never receive them; the descriptions sent with Claude turned on are used only to answer you.

That makes you responsible for them. Keep a backup of PowerBook's folder: we cannot recover books lost with a computer. Keep your statements, as the law may require you to keep records for years.

8. The licence key and Claude

A licence key lets PowerBook ask Claude. It is free, lasts the time the key states, may be used on the number of computers it states, and carries a daily limit on questions. It is personal to you and may not be shared or sold.

We may change these limits for keys issued later, decline to renew a key, or stop the service, as it is provided at our cost. Without it PowerBook keeps working, with its own models' suggestions.

9. Updates and support

We may publish new versions; whether to install them is your choice, and PowerBook does not update itself. We may stop publishing PowerBook at any time; what you have installed keeps working on your computer.

We offer no support commitment, though we welcome reports.

10. The Microsoft Store

If you got PowerBook from the Microsoft Store, the Store's terms also apply to your download. These terms are between you and Unidatum, not Microsoft, and Microsoft is not responsible for PowerBook or for supporting it.

11. No warranty, and the limit of our liability

PowerBook and this website are provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express, implied or statutory, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, profits or business, and our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid to Unidatum for PowerBook in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits liability the law does not let us limit, or takes away rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

12. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Unidatum and its people against claims, losses and costs, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of PowerBook, your breach of these terms, or your infringement of anyone else's rights. This does not apply where the law, including EU consumer law, does not allow it.

13. Ending

These terms apply while you use PowerBook. You may stop at any time by uninstalling it. We may end your licence for a breach you have not cured within 30 days of our notice, or at once for a breach of section 4 or 5. When it ends, stop using PowerBook and delete your copies; your books stay on your computer.

14. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland have exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK, you keep the protection of the mandatory law where you live, and may bring proceedings there.

Before starting formal proceedings, we each agree to try to resolve a dispute informally for at least 30 days. After that, either of us may start binding arbitration, and any dispute will be resolved on an individual basis and not in a class or representative action. This paragraph does not apply to users in the EU or the UK.

15. Privacy

How PowerBook and this website handle personal data is set out in the Privacy Policy (powerbook.unidatum.com/privacy).

16. Changes, and the rest

We may change these terms. We will post a material change here at least 30 days before it takes effect. Using PowerBook after the effective date means you accept the change.

If a provision is found invalid, it is changed as little as needed to be valid, and the rest stays in effect. These terms, with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and us about PowerBook; a written agreement you have signed with us prevails where it differs.
