PowerBook

Privacy Policy

Your books stay on your computer.

How PowerBook handles your data, on your computer, when you turn Claude on, when you ask for a licence, and on this website.

Effective October 22, 2026

Who we are

PowerBook is made by Unidatum Integrated Products Limited, Venture Hub, 136 Capel Street, Dublin D01 T2C9, Ireland, the controller for the personal data this policy describes, together with Unidatum Integrated Products LLC in the United States.

For anything about privacy, write to privacy@unidatum.eu. We have not appointed a statutory Data Protection Officer; that address handles every request.

In short

Your books stay on your computer
PowerBook has no account and no cloud. Your ledger is a folder on your computer, and it is not sent to Unidatum or anyone else.
Claude, only if you turn it on
With a licence key turned on, a bank line both of PowerBook's models are unsure of is sent to our hub and on to Anthropic's Claude for a suggestion: whether money came in or went out, and the line's description with card and reference numbers removed. Never its amount, its date, your balances or the rest of your books.
No tracking
The app has no analytics, crash reporting, advertising or update checks.
What else we see
Your name and email, if you ask for a licence key; and, when you download PowerBook from this site, a count of the download and Cloudflare's bot check.

What PowerBook keeps on your computer

Your books, in %AppData%\PowerBook in your Windows profile: your business's name, the bank lines you import (date, amount, description, the account they belong to, and the name of the file they came from), the journal entries you record, and the settings you choose. The statement files themselves are read and not kept.

Your own categoriser: the descriptions of the lines you have recorded with the account you chose for each, and the model trained from them. It is how PowerBook learns your payees, and it stays in the same folder.

If you turn Claude on, your licence key, and Claude's suggestions for the lines it was asked about.

The categoriser model you install is kept in %AppData%\unidatum\embed. It is the same public model for everyone and holds nothing about you.

PowerBook does not encrypt this folder itself: it is protected by your Windows account, and by BitLocker or Device Encryption if you have it turned on. Your own backup software may copy it, as it would any folder in your profile. PowerBook writes no log of what you do.

When PowerBook uses the internet

Nothing else: PowerBook listens on no network port, syncs with nothing, and does not check for updates.

Installing the categoriser
When you choose Install, PowerBook downloads the model (129 MB) from Hugging Face (huggingface.co), which sees your IP address as any website would. Nothing about your books is sent.
Asking Claude
Only with a licence key turned on, as the next section describes.
Opening a link
Links such as Get one free open in your web browser, and that site's own policy applies.

Asking Claude (optional)

PowerBook asks Claude only after you turn it on with a licence key, and only about a line both its models are unsure of; a line you have filed before, or that either model is sure of, is never sent. Turning Claude off, at the bottom left, stops it at once.

What is sent for each line: whether money came in or went out, and the description as your bank printed it, with card numbers, reference numbers and dates written in digits taken out. Descriptions can still name a payee, such as a shop, a client or a person you paid. With it go the list of accounts in your chart to choose from, and your licence key.

It travels over an encrypted connection to Unidatum's hub, a server of ours at Amazon Web Services in the United States. The hub checks the licence, passes the question to Claude, made by Anthropic, PBC, and returns the account Claude chose. Anthropic processes the question to produce the answer, under its own terms and privacy policy (anthropic.com/legal/privacy).

The licence carries the name and email address you asked for it with, and the hub records an identifier for each PowerBook installation that uses it, to count the three computers a licence allows. The hub keeps the questions and answers, and a record of each call (the licence, the time and what it cost), which is how the daily limit is enforced. We do not yet delete these on a schedule; write to us and we will delete yours.

We use what the hub keeps only to answer you, to enforce a licence's limits, and to find and fix faults. We do not use it to train any model, and we do not sell or share it.

Asking for a licence key

A licence key is requested on unidatum.ie, with your name, your email address and your agreement. We keep them, with the licence issued, to send you the key, to renew it, and to answer you; the key is emailed through our email provider. The unidatum.ie privacy policy (unidatum.ie/en/legal) covers that site.

The email's button opens a page on oil.unidatum.com that passes the key to PowerBook on your computer. The key travels after the # in the address, so it never reaches that server or its logs.

This website and downloads

This site is static pages served by Cloudflare. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Cloudflare, as our hosting provider, processes the requests it serves, including your IP address, under its own privacy policy (cloudflare.com/privacypolicy).

Before a download, the download page runs Cloudflare Turnstile, a check that you are a person and not a bot; Cloudflare sees your IP address and browser signals to decide. We then count each download: the product, version and file, whether it completed, the country Cloudflare places the request in, and your browser's user-agent string. We do not store your IP address with it. These counts are kept for three months.

If you install PowerBook from the Microsoft Store instead, Microsoft handles the install under its own privacy policy, and gives us only the aggregate statistics the Store gives every developer.

Sharing, selling, advertising

We do not sell or share personal information, and we show no advertising. The processors involved are Cloudflare (this site and the downloads), Amazon Web Services (the hub's server), Anthropic (answering the questions you send with Claude turned on) and our email provider (sending licence keys).

The hub and Anthropic are in the United States, so a description sent with Claude turned on is processed there.

Deleting your data

Your books are yours to delete: remove %AppData%\PowerBook, and %AppData%\unidatum\embed for the model. Deleting PowerBook.exe, or uninstalling it from the Microsoft Store, leaves your books in place, so that a new version finds them.

To have the hub's questions, answers and call records for your licence deleted, or your licence request, write to us. The download counts are not tied to you, and expire after three months.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you may ask us what personal data we hold about you, and to correct or delete it. Under the GDPR you also have the rights to restrict or object to processing and to portability; under California's CPRA, to know, delete, correct and opt out of sale or sharing (there is none to opt out of). Write to privacy@unidatum.eu: we answer within 30 days (45 under the CPRA), and may need to confirm who you are first.

Our legal basis under the GDPR is the performance of our agreement with you, for the licence and for answering the questions you send, and our legitimate interest in keeping the downloads for people rather than bots.

In the EU you may complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie), our lead supervisory authority, or to the authority where you live or work; in the UK, to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children

PowerBook is for businesses and is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Changes

If PowerBook starts handling data differently, we will update this page before the version that does so is released, and change the date below.
